What it is

Routing that knows what's under your wheels.

Pick how rough you want the day to be and it plans around that — then tells you what you signed up for before you turn a wheel. Have a play with the profiles below; these are real numbers from the same two towns.

What it does

The short version.

  • Three riding styles — Road, ADV and Hard ADV, not a dirt toggle
  • Properly offline — it can work out a new route with no signal
  • Official closures from the state feeds, on the map from day one
  • Rider reports — gates, locked gates, grids, crossings and closed roads
  • Knows your bike — fuel range off your own numbers, not an average
  • Loops — give it a distance and a direction and it builds you one

Before you start

One thing that saves a lot of hassle.

Sign up with your Apple ID email

TestFlight invites are tied to an Apple ID. If you register below with the same email address your Apple ID uses, the invite lands where it needs to and the whole thing takes about a minute.

Use a different address and you can still get there — it's just fiddlier, and I'd rather you spent the time riding.

Get setup for testing

Three steps to riding.

Ten minutes, most of which is the download.

  1. Register below

    The form at the bottom of this page. Takes a moment, and it's how I know where you ride so I can pair you with the right region.

  2. Install TestFlight

    Free from the App Store. It's Apple's own app for handing out test builds — you'll install TerraADV from it, and get updates through it.

    Grab it now and the next step takes seconds.

  3. Accept the invite

    The invite comes from Apple, not from me — that's just how TestFlight works, so keep an eye out for it rather than binning it as spam.

    Open it on your phone and TerraADV shows up in TestFlight. Tap Install and it lands on your home screen like any other app. New builds appear in TestFlight every week or two.

First run

Three things, then go ride.

  1. Set up the app on your phone

    Choose your style, download your region, and sign in. You can ride without an account — but for the beta, please sign in anyway so your reports and routes sync.

  2. Add your bike/s

    Go to Settings and tap My Bikes. Add whatever you ride — tank size, what it really drinks, tyres, weight. Give it a name if you like. Then set one as active.

    This is what makes the fuel estimates yours rather than generic. If you skip it, everything else still works, you just won't get fuel range.

  3. Plan a route or two

    Pick somewhere you know well first — you'll spot immediately whether it's got the surfaces right. Then try somewhere you don't.

    Try the same trip on two different profiles and watch what changes. That's the bit I most want your eyes on.

Then the important bit

Have fun, and tell me what happened.

There are two different kinds of “that’s not right”, and they go to different places. Knowing which is which saves us both a lot of time.

Tell me — it’s the app

  • It crashed, froze, or did something strange
  • Directions were confusing, late, or pointed the wrong way
  • The ETA was nonsense
  • The battery didn’t last the day

This is the stuff I can actually fix, and the stuff I can’t find on my own.

Mark it — it’s the map

  • A road that’s closed. Mark it and everyone behind you gets the warning
  • Gates, locked gates, cattle grids and water crossings, while you’re stopped there anyway

The map comes from OpenStreetMap, not from me, and the world changes faster than it does. Marking it in the app is what fixes it — for you and for everyone else.

  • Don’t worry about surface calls — sealed, gravel or track comes from the same map data, and it’ll come good as the map does
  • No forms, no surveys, no weekly check-ins

The orange flag

Tap the orange flag while you’re navigating and the app captures what it was doing at the time. Send me the files it produces, along with any screenshots, and I can see exactly what you saw.

Screenshots on their own are welcome too. So is a plain email saying “this bit’s rubbish”.

Step one

Get on the beta list.

Use your Apple ID email if you can. Tell me where you ride — the map comes good fastest where a few riders overlap.

Not listed? Just type it — anything goes.

Invites go out in batches through TestFlight — watch for an email from Apple. Beta testers keep TerraADV free for good. Your address is used for the beta and nothing else.

One to mull over — what would you pay for this?

Per year, once it’s finished. I’ll ask before testing wraps up — by then you’ll have a far better idea than either of us does now.

Who's building this

I'm Nathan. I ride around Victoria, and I built TerraADV because there had to be a better answer than planning a route in one app and uploading it to another.

It's a one-person project. When you email, you get me.
